Last weekend I was working in my garden trying to get it flat enough to plant. During the digging I uncovered this large piece of rusty something. I think it was once used to hold something up. I photographed my foot in the photo so you could get an idea of size. That is a size 42 clog.
Since I have never tried rust dying, I thought this was the perfect time. I used two very different fabrics to see how this would work. However it has been a week now and nothing is happening. I've tried to keep the fabric wet. However, during the day, the sun really dries it out fast. Could I put it in a plastic bag? Or would that make it mold? Suggestions welcomed.

Wet the fabric with a 50/50 solution of water and vinegar, then put the whole thing (metal plus fabric) into a black trash bag and tie it shut. Forget about it for a few days, and voila!
I just tried rust dying for the first time and actually have a piece rusting right now. I'm doing smaller pieces but, what I did was wet the fabric with water and white vinegar, add rusty stuff, put in plastic and by the end of the day, pieces are done. I then soak in salt water for 15 minutes or so and then wash it out in my sink. My pieces are rusting fast.
Ann, did you clean the piece before trying to use it? If you don't get the majority of the crusted on dirt off of it, the fabric won't make contact with the rust, and whatever cool looking pattern you get on the fabric washes off.
I love the hot weather down here (high 90s this month) because stuff rust stains in a matter of hours. Wrap it in black plastic garbage bags but not air tight. You should see some results almost immediately. Do the water and vinegar thing and keep the fabric damp.
What a find! I'm hoping to do some rust dyeing while at the beach...I haven't found any rusty old things to use (though my MIL offered herself...I don't think that will work!)...I did bring some wire to do wrapping. We'll see how it turns out, but it sounds like I'd better get it started. I guess vinegar is the key.
